Writing Reflection

Over the course of this class, my idea of writing has changed quite drastically. Yes, my basic "definition" of writing has changed pretty significantly, but, my appreciation and approach to writing has also changed. I originally decided to declare a writing minor because I figured it's fairly different than Econ, and every job loves to see that their applicant can not just write, but write well. It's a critical skill when it comes to the workforce. That was my primary motivation. Over the duration in this course, I've realized that writing is SO much more than that. It is a great skill that could potentially help me get a job, but it's also a critical part of our everyday lives. I never used to think about the impacts that writing had on me beyond the classroom. However, I've come to realize that these impacts are quite large.
Additionally, the way I have learned to approach my writing has changed pretty significantly. Being an Econ major, I was so concerned with the technical side of each writing assignment. I wanted my answers to be textbook and perfect. I was scared to venture away from the original question. However, I've come to realize that writing requires creativity in every form; you need to be incredibly open in your approach. Writing is not just assignments and grades, it's a way to express yourself and to be creative. This can definitely be seen in my progression of posts from the beginning of the quarter. At first, I was trying to make sure I didn't diverge from the question whatsoever and I tried to model my assignments after whatever inspired the question. But now, I've realized that I need to be my own creator. Part of writing is being able to be inspired and being able to express your thoughts.

Today, to be a writer, it does not just mean sitting at your desk and composing literature, essays, books, whatever it may be. We are all writers. We're all constantly composing. It's just in different forms. We're constantly composing text messages, emails, Snapchats, Instagrms...the list is endless. Whether we realize it or not, we are all constantly composing. I never used to acknowledge the fact that these small, everyday tasks involve significant writing and creativity. I text my friends and my family. I email teachers and potential employers. Each sentence that I send them is a form of expression and communication and none of it would be possible without the process of writing. Often times, kids, and even young adults, think of writing as a chore. It's something that's forced upon them. Most people don't realize that they're willingly writing in different forms when they're sending texts or using social media applications. Writing today is incredibly under appreciated. I think people need to acknowledge its importance in our everyday lives and in our culture. I know for me, talking about writing and realizing its prominence in my life has been especially eye opening.
