What is writing?

“To gain your own voice, you have to forget about having it heard.”
—Allen Ginsberg, WD

Cue Visual One . . .

Writing: the activity or skill of marking coherent words on paper and composing text

Writing is not just words on a piece of paper. It goes far beyond that. Writing is expression, personality, representation. Writing is a way to escape reality. Writing is a way to make fiction come alive.

“We write to taste life twice, in the moment and in retrospect.”
-Anais Nin

Words have the ability to last a lifetime.

Cue Visual Two . . .

Anne Frank wrote about truth, experience, and hardship. Maya Angelou was a writer, poet, activist. Walt Disney wrote through films.

Studies show that writers outperform traditional students. Writing is a critical skill.

“If you can dream it, you can do it.”
-Walt Disney

Writing is found everyday in endless different forms. It doesn’t just represent knowledge and education; it represents life. Writing comes in every shape and form when you don’t even realize it. Whether it’s the text message you’re sending or the song you’re singing, it’s always there.

Cue Different Types of Sentences . . .

Description: The red-orange sky burs with color as the sun began to set and end the cool breeze began to take over.

Persuasion: Come on, I promise if you come with me you won’t regret it.

Expository: The University of Denver began their fall quarter classes on Monday, September 12th.

Narrative: “I really want to go to the beach,” said Alex.

Cue Abstract vs. Descriptive . . .
